This article discusses an approach to management development that focusses on how the manager thinks and feels. Traditional approaches to management development are content based and tend to produce only partial solutions. Managers have been told that the job of management is to plan, organise, delegate, supervise and control. On the surface this appears to make sense. Of course managers must plan, organise, delegate and so on. Much recent research into management however has tended to discredit advice about such an orderly, rational process. Training and development programmes that address the way managers think and feel are required. The way real flesh and blood managers actually perform is strongly related to their own understandings about management and not necessarily to what they are supposed to have covered on their last training course.
